Bible Study: Sunday Service ~ Eye Witness

Lessons from People Who Saw Jesus Suffer

“But who do you say I am?” (Matthew 16:13)

This question from Jesus still echoes today.
Not just for the disciples but for each of us.

Who is Jesus to you?

The people who witnessed His suffering responded in different ways. Their reactions reveal something deeper not just about them, but about us.

The Religious Leaders – Empty Religion, Closed Hearts

The Jewish leaders had all the evidence they needed.
They saw the miracles. They heard the teachings.

Yet, they refused to surrender.

Why?

Because their hearts were already closed.

Sometimes, we may look like them more than we’d like to admit:

  • “I need more proof.”
  • “I already know this.”
  • Selective or delayed obedience
  • Religious… but unchanged
  • Struggling with control

It’s possible to know about Jesus and still not follow Him.

Pontius Pilate – Choosing Fear Over Truth

“I find no fault in this man.” (Luke 23:4–7)

Pilate knew the truth.
He saw Jesus was innocent.

But instead of standing firm, he chose to please the crowd.

Fear won over truth.

When we listen to people more than we listen to truth,
we slowly drift away from Jesus.

Herod Antipas – Seeking Without Surrender

Herod was curious about Jesus.
He wanted to see miracles. He wanted to be entertained.

But when Jesus didn’t meet his expectations,
his curiosity turned into rejection.

Not all who seek Jesus are willing to surrender to Him.

Sometimes, we want Jesus on our terms
not as Lord, but as someone who fits our desires.

Barabbas – Grace Misunderstood

That day, something extraordinary happened:

  • The guilty man was released
  • The innocent man was condemned

Barabbas deserved the cross.
Jesus did not.

Yet Jesus took his place.

We are Barabbas.

Many people still don’t fully realize this truth that Jesus took our place on the cross.

Grace is not just a concept.
It is a personal rescue.

Simon of Cyrene – Let the Cross Transform You

“As they led Him away, they seized Simon…” (Luke 23:26)

What started as an interruption
became a life-changing encounter.

Simon didn’t choose the cross
but the cross changed him.

Sometimes, the moments we resist
are the very moments God uses to transform us.

The Daughters of Jerusalem – Feeling Without Following

“Do not weep for me; weep for yourselves…” (Luke 23:27–29)

They felt compassion. They wept for Jesus.

But Jesus redirected them.

Feeling something for Jesus is not the same as following Him.

Emotion is not commitment.

Jesus warned about judgment and the end times not to scare us, but to call us to:

  • Repentance
  • Commitment
  • True discipleship

The Two Criminals – The Power of a Decision

“They were led out with Him to be executed.” (Luke 23:32)

Two men.
Same environment.
Same evidence.
Same proximity to Jesus.

But completely different responses.

One rejected Him.
The other believed.

The difference was the condition of the heart.

Final Reflection: The Cross Is Before You

Every person in this story had an encounter with Jesus.

And every encounter required a response.

Today, nothing has changed.

The cross is still before you.

  • Will you resist like the religious leaders?
  • Fear like Pilate?
  • Stay curious like Herod?
  • Miss grace like many do with Barabbas?
  • Be transformed like Simon?
  • Feel but not follow?
  • Or choose to believe like the repentant criminal?

The choice is yours.

Not tomorrow.
Not someday.

Decide today.
